Curious Minds Ask

What is Africa DX-NET?

Africa DX-NET is a weekly amateur radio event designed to facilitate and promote communication between amateur radio operators worldwide and those across the African continent. Hosted by a NET control station, this event serves as a dedicated platform for operators to establish contacts, exchange experiences, and enhance their DX (long-distance) capabilities. By focusing on African stations, Africa DX-NET not only helps to increase the visibility of African operators on the global stage but also fosters international goodwill and collaboration within the amateur radio community.

How do I join the NET?

Participation in Africa DX-NET is straightforward and open to all amateur radio operators. Simply choose your preferred mode and frequency, and tune in at the scheduled time. Once on the air, check in with the NET control operator, who will facilitate the connections and guide the session. Whether you’re calling from near or far, joining the NET is as easy as signing in and engaging with fellow operators across the globe.

Can I become a NET Controller?

We’re always looking to expand our team of NET controllers to help manage and facilitate our weekly sessions. If you’re an experienced operator with a passion for connecting the global amateur radio community and am able to hear the main NET controller V51MA on a regular basis, we invite you to apply. Serving as a NET controller is a rewarding way to contribute to the success of Africa DX-NET and help grow the network. If you’re interested, please reach out to us via our contact page. We’d love to hear from you!

Is it free to participate?

Yes absolutely! Africa DX-NET is all about the joy of radio and the spirit of global communication, with no fees or obligations involved. This event is purely for fun and community-building, and it’s completely independent. We are not affiliated with any DX organizations, commercial enterprises, controlling bodies, or DX-pedition ventures. Our focus is on fostering connections and sharing our love for amateur radio, free from any financial interests or external agendas.

What equipment do I need?

To join Africa DX-NET, you’ll need an HF transceiver capable of operating on the high-frequency bands, with a focus on two popular modes: SSB (Single Side Band) and FT8. For SSB, a good microphone and a well-tuned antenna will help you achieve clear voice communication over long distances. If you prefer FT8, a digital mode, you’ll need a computer with appropriate software, like WSJT-X, connected to your transceiver. Both modes require a reliable antenna system designed for HF bands to ensure strong signals and successful contacts during the NET.

Can I make international contacts?

Africa DX-NET is dedicated to facilitating and promoting contacts with amateur radio operators across the African continent. Our NET sessions provide a unique opportunity for global operators to connect with African stations, fostering international friendships and expanding the reach of African hams on the global stage. Whether you’re looking to make a new contact or complete a rare DX, Africa DX-NET is your gateway to engaging with the vibrant amateur radio community across Africa.

Support Africa DX-NET!

Africa DX-NET is proudly run by a dedicated team of volunteers who share a passion for amateur radio and connecting the world. To keep the NET operational and growing, we rely on donations of money or equipment from generous supporters. These contributions not only help us maintain and improve the NET but also allow us to assist less privileged radio operators who are passionate about the hobby. By providing them with the necessary resources to get on the air, we aim to empower more operators across Africa to join the global amateur radio community.

If you’d like to make a donation, click here to use our PayPal address or contact us for more information.

We have partnered with zClixCreations on Etsy where you can buy Africa DX-NET merchandise. All proceeds from sales of these items go to helping Africa DX-NET. Below are some examples.
